Putting Pen To Photo: Pathways toward the Hybrid Photobook and Beyond
Speaker: Kathy Winograd is a Colorado Book Award poet, essayist, and photographer. Her most recent book, This Visible Speaking: Catching Light Through The Camera’s Eye, a hybrid book of photos, poetry, and prose published by The Humble Essayist Press, received an honorable mention from the 2025 Eric Hoffer Book Awards and was shortlisted for its Grand Prize. It is also a Finalist for the 2025 National Indie Excellence® Awards for photography, a 2025 Book Excellence Award winner for Photography, and a finalist in poetry for the 2025 Colorado Author League Awards. Since receiving the gift of a camera during COVID, Winograd has published her photos online with her poetry and essays, exhibited in several juried shows, has had her photography (and poetry) selected for exhibit at the Koebel Library Gallery, won awards, and published a book of words and photos. She is a member of the Littleton Fine Arts Guild and the Women’s Caucus for Art.
Cormorants, hawks, foxes, elk, deer, a widow skimmer, a night heron, a stellar jay, a yellow warbler, a red-tailed hawk, a bee, a kestrel, painted turtles, orchids, blue flax, wild geranium, lichen, and even a raindrop do the same, with Winograd capturing them in-the-moment, fleeting and glorious, amplifying the colorful, contoured, eye-delighting reality that simply is everything.
Program: Writing about art has classical roots stemming back to Dante and beyond. “Ekphrastic writing,” as it is called, has developed from simply the description of art to a creative writing that can be lyrical, prosaic, metaphoric, and narrative. Winograd will share her journey from poet to photographer to writer of photography and offer insights, approaches, and resources for finding new pathways to deepening your understanding of your own work and expanding the ways you can share it by combining writing with your photographs. Ultimately, the photobook/art book is an art form that offers endless opportunities for creativity and originality and is a form recognized by contests everywhere. Please bring to this session a photograph or two and computer/paper/ink so you can try out a few writing ideas.
